Savannah, Georgia, situated in the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States, was founded in 1733 as the first colonial settlement. As it was one of the first planned cities in the United States, it is arguably one of the most interesting.
Known for its unique historic squares, these are actually landmarks and parks within the city. Early settler and leader,James Oglethorpe, together with the Native American chief, Tomochichi, conceived and implemented this type of city idea. There are over twenty squares throughout the historic part of Savannah, and they were originally planned to be walled in, to prepare for Spanish attack in the early days of settlement. Apparently, this idea was logistically not possible, and now the open squares afford walkers and cyclers some quiet and beautiful areas within the city. Those new to the city undoubtedly have a difficult time driving around these treed, grassy areas, but the traffic patterns can be easily deciphered by those who using their cars to get around.
A walking tour or carriage ride through Savannah will afford you the chance to see and hear about many places in the historic part of the city. Many people come to the city to see the site of the book and movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", which showcased Savannah. The beauty of the city has been captured in many Hollywood movies, aside from "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Many people come to Savannah to see the azaleas in full bloom. In colors ranging from pink to white, the beautiful flowers are perhaps best viewed in the March - mid-April time period. Depending on the amount of rain and the temperature during this period, it can also be the perfect time to see the dogwood and magnolia trees looking their best.
Over one-half million people celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Savannah each year, as it is their largest and most celebrated annual event. Hotel rooms are always sold-out for the weekends surrounding this day, and the city stays abuzz for days. Visitors to Savannah should make early plans to take part in this event.
