Pablo Neruda, recipient of the 1971 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Parral, Chile. His original name was Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. His father was a railway worker, and his mother was a schoolteacher. She died when he was just an infant. Neruda was educated at the Instituto Pedagogico in Santiago and the University of Chile.
He first began writing poetry when he was ten years old and began contributing articles to the daily LA MANANA when he was 13. His first book, CREPUSCULARIO, was published when he was 19.
Pablo Neruda died of leukemia in Santiago, Chile in 1973.
